A British soap opera is set to star a young woman who is a slave in a North Carolina plantation after being pregnant with a boy, a British soap drama is set the second episode of this season.
“The Handmaiden” will air next Monday (May 11) on BBC America, after being set to air in the U.K. in May.
It follows a story of a slave named Alice who becomes pregnant with the illegitimate son of a plantation owner.
Alice is pregnant with her second child, and her slave husband, John, is also a slave, the BBC said in a statement.
The second episode is “set to a much more poignant and moving point,” the broadcaster said.
The first episode of “The Handsome Lady” was released in November 2017.
The British soap has won multiple awards, including the Golden Globe for Outstanding British Series, and a nomination for a best British Drama for its second season.
The series has also been praised for its portrayal of slavery and its depiction of the effects of domestic abuse.
It was nominated for three Emmys, including best drama series.
The show will air on BBC AMERICA and be available to stream on the BBC iPlayer.
